Jan Clements
Jan was admitted as a solicitor in 1996. She initially specialised in criminal and public law, such as judicial review, and later developed a niche editorial legal practice.
In 1999 Jan joined Guardian News & Media as a media lawyer and helped to set up the in-house editorial legal department. She was senior editorial lawyer at Guardian News & Media for some 18 years, playing a leading role in what became an award-winning in-house team. Since 2016 Jan developed her own practice as a media lawyer offering pre-publication advice and training to news organisations, broadcasters, specialist publishers and NGOs. Jan has worked with highly respected publishers and broadcasters including The Times & Sunday Times, Guardian News & Media and ITN as well as with NGOs such as Global Witness and specialist publishers such as British Medical Journal.
Jan advises on editorial (including digital and broadcast) content; on prepublication issues; data protection policies and practices; ethical issues around newsgathering; intellectual property; and compliance questions. She also has expertise in freedom of information having handled several successful FOI appeals.
